The Local Variable

When TED Prize winner JR announced his wish to turn the world “Inside Out”, inviting people around the globe to share a photo portrait along with a statement about what they stand for, artists Jorgina Stamogianni and Dimitris Sipsis stood up to participate.

Examining the fabric of the island, the artists have photographed the local communities highlighting the inhabitants; the people who stay on the island after the summer is over, the ones that stay to endure the heavy jobs, survive in solitude during the long winters without sufficient medical care or amusement, the ones that are cut off from the rest of the world for many months.

“We were inspired by the Santorini Biennale to participate in JR’s TED Prize wish, and demonstrate the island‘s commitment to history and the inhabitant. This project was a photographic experiment attempting to explore and bring to surface the local identity of the island, which is frequently obscured by the massive development taking place in Santorini. Our goal was to sensitize the public eye regarding the concept of locality as well as to engage the locals in the game of this year’s Bienale.”

In order to pay tribute to those who play an essential role in Santorini’s society and history but who are rarely noticed, the project will emphasize the community’s will to continually unite around a common belief in the island’s ethos.
